Short-Nosed Dogs, Higher Heat Risk: Why Hydration Matters Even More


French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs and English Bulldogs are unmistakable. But the same anatomy that gives brachycephalic breeds their characteristic appearance can also put them at a significant disadvantage when temperatures rise.


For these dogs, hydration isn’t simply about satisfying thirst. It’s part of supporting the physiological system they rely on to cool themselves.


And that’s exactly the kind of challenge KORE9 was designed around.


A Cooling System Already Working Harder

Dogs don’t cool themselves like humans.

Rather than relying primarily on sweating, dogs dissipate much of their excess heat through panting and respiratory evaporation. Brachycephalic dogs have shortened skulls and altered upper-airway anatomy that can compromise airflow and make heat dissipation more difficult.


The risk isn’t theoretical.


Large-scale veterinary research has found that brachycephalic dogs have approximately twice the odds of developing heat-related illness compared with dogs with a typical skull shape. Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are among the breeds identified at increased risk.


For short-nosed dogs, hot weather deserves additional respect.


You Can’t Evaporate Water You Don’t Have

Panting relies on evaporation.


And evaporation requires water.


Canine hydration research has shown that as dehydration increases, the availability of water for evaporation, salivation and circulation diminishes. As a result, heat tolerance can decline.


Now consider the implications for a brachycephalic dog.


Their respiratory anatomy may already make cooling more difficult. Add inadequate hydration, high temperatures, activity and humidity, and you’re placing additional stress on an already challenged cooling system.


That’s why KORE9 believes hydration should be proactive, not reactive.


Step One: Get the Dog to Drink

One of the foundations behind KORE9 is remarkably simple:


Water only works if the dog actually drinks it.

In a Penn Vet study of detection dogs working in hot conditions, dogs offered a flavored oral hydration solution consumed an average of 15.61 mL/kg/hour, compared with only 7.04 mL/kg/hour when offered water alone. That’s more than twice the fluid intake.

Importantly, researchers couldn’t determine whether the hydration effects were due to the electrolytes themselves or simply the dogs consuming substantially more fluid.


That distinction matters.


Voluntary water intake is one of the central principles behind KORE9.


Then Comes Cellular Hydration

KORE9 goes beyond simply encouraging drinking by incorporating osmolytes, compounds involved in regulating water balance within cells.


One of the best researched is betaine.

Betaine acts as an organic osmolyte, helping cells regulate water balance and protect cellular structures during osmotic stress. Research has also investigated betaine in the context of thermal stress and heat tolerance, including potential effects on cellular hydration and thermoregulation.


KORE9 incorporates betaine, taurine and glycine from magnesium glycinate as part of its osmolyte-focused approach to hydration.


It’s an important emerging area of hydration science. However, research has not established that betaine or KORE9 prevents heatstroke in dogs. Instead, osmolyte research provides a compelling scientific rationale for supporting cellular hydration alongside something we already know is critically important: adequate water consumption.


That’s a fundamentally different philosophy from simply making water saltier.


Hot + Humid + Brachycephalic = Pay Attention

Warm climates deserve even greater caution.

High temperatures make it harder for dogs to dissipate heat into the environment, while high humidity makes evaporative cooling less effective.

For a Boston Terrier playing outside on a hot, humid afternoon, hydration shouldn’t begin once the dog looks overheated.


It should begin before activity starts.

Encourage drinking beforehand. Offer water frequently. Avoid strenuous activity during extreme heat and humidity. Provide shade and cooling. And don’t assume that because a bowl of water is available, your dog is adequately hydrated.


Dogs Aren’t Small Humans

That’s ultimately the science behind KORE9.

Dogs cool differently. They lose water differently. They don’t sweat across their bodies like human athletes. And they certainly don’t understand that they should “hydrate before the workout.”


So why should canine hydration simply mimic human hydration?


KORE9 approaches hydration through three principles: encourage voluntary water intake through palatability, support cellular hydration with osmolytes, and formulate around canine physiology.


For every dog, hydration matters.
